La Sociedad Hispana de Doylestown named Germantown Academy seniors Abbe Goldstein '17 and Gavin Rees '17 finalists for their 2017 Scholarship Competition during a ceremony on April 26 at the The County Theater. Each year, La Sociedad Hispana offers scholarships to local high school students that are currently enrolled in the highest level of Spanish at their respective schools.
In 2012, Sociedad Hispana began offering scholarships to high school students who demonstrate a strong interest in the language and cultures of Spanish speaking countries. This year, La Sociedad awarded almost $8,000 to seven students, including Goldstein and Rees, who each received a $500 scholarship.
“We are so proud of Abbe and Gavin for receiving this award,” said Upper School Spanish teacher Yvette Márquez.
The application process included submitting an essay in which Goldstein and Rees had to explain their plans for using the language in the future. Once their papers passed the first level of the competition, they participated in a series of interviews.
“I’ve taught both Abbe and Gavin for two years and they are outstanding students truly deserving of this scholarship,” noted Señora Márquez. “Their awards also reflect the quality of the students and the teachers within the Modern Languages at GA.”
