Seven Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists

Germantown Academy is proud to announce that seven members of the Class of 2019 have been named Semifinalists of the National Merit Scholarship Program. Jason Chee '19, Andrew Feng '19, Alexander Gu '19, Kevin Hou '19, Vinit Joshi '19, Priya Padhye '19, and Zoe Torrey '19 will now move on to the finalist round in hopes of winning one of 7,500 Merit Scholarship Awards.

Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. In September 2018, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis; they are the highest scoring entrants in each state.

In February 2019, about 15,000 Semifinalists will be notified that they have advanced to Finalist standing. Beginning in March 2019 and continuing to mid-June, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will notify approximately 7,500 Finalists that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship award. Merit Scholarship awards are of three types: National Merit $2500 Scholarships, Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, and College-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.
