Sean Patrick Gibbons Named New Belfry Director at Germantown Academy

Germantown Academy has named Sean Patrick Gibbons the school’s new Belfry Director. The Belfry Club is the nation's oldest, continuously run high school dramatic club that produces two major shows each school year in the Arts Center.

“After reading 50 completed applications and conducting a dozen interviews, I couldn’t be happier to announce the appointment of Sean Patrick Gibbons as the new Belfry Director and Upper School Theatre Arts teacher,” said Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760. “Based on the input we received from alums regarding their dreams for the next director, and after hearing feedback from faculty, staff, admin, and Belfry performers, I am confident that Mr. Gibbons is an outstanding fit to continue the long-standing excellence of theater at GA. With extensive experience as an actor, director, and teacher, Mr. Gibbons brings an incredible range to the position, and a natural student rapport that will make an immediate impact on our program.”

Gibbons will head to GA from Boston where he is currently serving as the Theater Department Chair and a member of the acting faculty of The Boston Arts Academy. He teaches theater and musical theater classes at this professional performing and visual arts high school and leads the Summer at BAA programming for students interested in pursuing the arts following graduation. Gibbons has also served as the national and international American Musical Dramatic Academy (AMDA) audition representative in New York for the past three years. He coaches students in song interpretation and monologue work, ultimately deciding on their acceptance to the AMDA training program. Gibbons has also taught at the Boston Theater Company as a Shakespeare Teaching Artist for K-12 students around Greater Boston.

“I am beyond excited and grateful to be joining the performing arts department at GA,” Gibbons said. “It is my honor to train the next generation of theatre artists while combining my range of professional experience with explorative play, collaborative imagination, and creative possibility. I look forward to immersing myself in GA's community and cultivating rich artistic experiences for our students rooted in process and courageous storytelling.”

Gibbons spent several semesters as an adjunct professor at Dean College, American International College, and Florida Atlantic University. He was also a workshop and Masterclass teacher at Wellsley College, Brandeis University, University of Scranton, and Emerson College, and spent the summer of 2022 as a member of the theater faculty at the International Theater and Dance Project in Syros, Greece, where he led the Monologue Coaching Intensive for BFA Theater majors.

His acting experience includes Off-Broadway, Regional, and New Play Developments, as well as national commercial work. Gibbons has directed and produced dozens of shows at Boston Arts Academy, and after becoming certified in Intimacy Direction, has led casts in several plays at Brandeis University, Emerson College, and the Scranton Shakespeare Festival, to name a few. He is also the founder of Nail the Audition, the Sean Patrick Gibbons Actor’s Studio, where he coaches high school students for BFA and MFA auditions and assists them in the college admission process.

Gibbons will begin his GA tenure in August 2024.
