On Tuesday, June 9, the Germantown Academy community gathered in the Arts Center to celebrate the 101 members of the Class of 2030 during Middle School Final Assembly.

The ceremony marked the culmination of the students' Middle School years and recognized their accomplishments, growth, and contributions to the community as they prepare to begin their Upper School journey.

Head of Middle School Jonas Jeswald reflected on the positive consequences that come from thoughtful decisions. Drawing on the school's phone- and smartwatch-free initiatives during the academic day, the Boston trip, and Student Government Association (SGA) events, he noted how students benefited from being more present with one another.

Without the distractions of devices, students experienced more conversations, more laughter, more games, and stronger connections with their classmates. Jeswald emphasized that the Class of 2030 embraced those opportunities and, as a result, enjoyed a uniquely connected Middle School experience.

Middle School Latin Teacher and SGA Co-Advisor Heather Galante served as the faculty speaker, centering her remarks on the power of "ands"—the idea that seemingly opposite emotions can exist together. She described the day as both joyful and bittersweet: a time to celebrate the students' accomplishments while also recognizing that their Middle School chapter is coming to a close.

Galante reflected on her memories of the class as sixth graders while encouraging students and faculty alike to fully appreciate the moment they were sharing together. Drawing on her love of the ancient world, she compared Middle School students to the heroes of Greek mythology, two groups caught between worlds. Just as Greek heroes existed between the mortal and divine realms, Middle School students occupy the space between childhood and adulthood.

"Class of 2030," she said, "I wish you a world of empathy and understanding as you continue the Odyssey of your life into ninth grade and beyond. It has been an honor to teach you."

Student speakers Connor R. '30 and Louisa H. '30 offered reflections on their Middle School years and lessons they hope their classmates will carry forward. Connor recalled arriving at GA as a new sixth grader just two years and nine months ago and encouraged his peers to continue putting themselves out there as they enter Upper School. He urged classmates to branch out, meet new people, and embrace the discomfort that often accompanies growth.

Louisa encouraged her fellow graduates to appreciate the present moment rather than always looking ahead to what comes next. Reflecting on the many memories made during Middle School, she challenged her classmates to slow down, recognize the significance of the moments they are living through, and fully embrace the experiences that lie ahead.

Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760 thanked and congratulated the Middle School faculty for their dedication and support of the students throughout their Middle School careers. He also congratulated the Class of 2030 and encouraged them to take full advantage of the many opportunities available in the Upper School, beginning on their very first day.

The ceremony also featured the presentation of academic, artistic, and community awards honoring students for excellence across a variety of disciplines.
