Germantown Academy student Luke Duthie ’21 was the selected as the National Overall Winner of the 2018-2019 Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) Americanism-Patriotism Award. Duthie was honored during Morning Meeting on May 31 by members of FRA Branch 146 and presented with the FRA National Certificate as well as a check for $7,500. Duthie was selected as the National 10th Grade First Place Winner and ultimately as FRA’s Overall National Winner from all 7th through 12th grade essays.
“As nice as it is to be recognized for my writing and earn such an amazing cash prize, the real satisfaction comes from the process itself,” said Duthie, whose essay was entitled “What Freedom of Speech Means to Me.” I love writing and voicing my opinions on topics I care about. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have a platform in which I can express my viewpoint. Freedom of speech and the responsibility that comes with that right is a pressing topic nowadays. My passion for this topic was the driving force in my writing process and I hope I was able to use this opportunity to affect change on a higher level."
