Kids Teaching Kids: GA Upper School Students Spark Scientific Curiosity in Kindergarten Class

At Germantown Academy, meaningful connections across grade levels are woven into the fabric of the school experience, from all students learning in a series of interconnected buildings to opportunities designed for older and younger students to engage together. One of the most beloved traditions is the Kids Teaching Kids (KTK) program, where Upper School volunteers partner with PreK and Kindergarten learners to explore hands-on, age-appropriate science concepts. The Lower School students look forward to spending time with older “buddies” while discovering how the world works.

Recently, students in Kindergarten Teacher Kate Oakes’ class participated in an exciting KTK session that turned on light bulbs—literally. Guided by their Upper School mentors, the young Patriots assembled and decorated their mini light bulbs, gaining an early understanding of electricity, circuits, and illumination through playful, tactile learning. To make the experience even more magical, the Upper School students helped the Kindergarteners design paper shadow puppets, allowing them to test their homemade lightbulbs and see their creations in action.

Programs like KTK deepen students’ love of learning while fostering leadership, confidence, and connection across the GA community—lighting the way for future discoveries.
