Jianna Kim '25 Combines Passion for Music with Community Service

This story about Jianna Kim '25 is a testament to the power of volunteerism. Starting as a youth volunteer for the Special Olympics track and field team in 6th Grade, Kim's passion for supporting individuals with disabilities grew into a lifelong commitment. Her dedication led her to initiate a plaque installation project with Worcester Township to encourage and support Special Olympics athletes and their families.

Kim's commitment to volunteerism led her to found GIVE-Youth, a non-profit aimed at encouraging youth engagement in volunteerism. The organization now has 67 members across three countries and five states, each region working towards positive change in their local communities. Their annual book, clothing, and food drive, which they conduct internationally, has been instrumental in providing essential resources to those in need while fostering a spirit of generosity among their members.

Kim's love for music inspired her to establish the Grace Chamber Music Youth Club (GCMYC) within the established non-profit. They have been organizing sensory-friendly fundraising concerts annually since 2020 for the Special Olympics, aiming to create experiences that everyone can enjoy. These events have not only been a source of joy but have also helped them raise a total of $7,260 with an audience of 350 people across their concerts. Their efforts have garnered local media attention, having been featured in newsletters by the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra Music Institution.

Kim's story is a reminder that anyone, regardless of age, can make a positive impact in their community through volunteerism. "I believe that the spirit of volunteerism and the joy of music can make significant impacts and inspire others to do the same, both locally and globally," Kim stated.
