ABOUT GA COLLEGE COUNSELING:

Led by Director of College Counseling Karen Mason, Germantown Academy's team of college counselors educates students and parents about the world of college admissions so they can make informed choices that result in matriculation to a college or university where the student can continue to grow intellectually and emotionally.

College Counseling at GA provides two essential services to students: ADVISING and COUNSELING. As advisors, college counselors educate students about the college search and application processes. As counselors, college counselors develop relationships with their students, listen to their goals, aspirations, and concerns, and encourage them to explore colleges that will help them to continue the process that they have begun at GA, of becoming their best selves.

Below are some fun facts about GA's College Counseling Program:

  • Each full-time counselor works individually with 35 students at the most.

  • During College Seminar and Personal Essay Writing, members of the junior class complete their Common Application, including the essay.

  • GA’s College Counseling teams partners with parents and guardians, hosting grade level college counseling meetings in the sophomore, junior, and senior years and offering "Coffees with College Counseling" for any Upper School parent throughout the year.

  • Traditionally, approximately 30% of each graduating class moves on to play a varsity sport in college.

  • Of the 123 members of the Class of 2015 (135 total members of the class) with college graduation results reported by the National Student Clearinghouse, 98% graduated from college in 5 years. Nationally, the rate reported by the National Center for Educational Statistics is 62% for 6 years.
