Germantown Academy Alumni Spotlight: Kyle Sonlin '15

Germantown Academy graduate Kyle Sonlin '15 has embarked on an extraordinary journey, making significant strides in the blockchain industry and establishing himself as a mentor and thought leader.

After graduation, Sonlin enrolled at the University of Miami. Recognizing the untapped potential of the city's business community, Sonlin saw an opportunity to establish a network and differentiate himself in a rapidly evolving tech scene. His decision proved to be a game-changer, as he has since experienced measurable success and unwavering motivation in the Sunshine State. During his college years, Sonlin co-founded his first professional business, Security Token Group. This venture provided him with invaluable experience in the blockchain industry, where he led a team of nearly 30 individuals. Together, they navigated the challenges of this emerging technology, building a private market index comprised of nearly $25 billion in assets, ranging from equities to debt and real estate.

As the years progressed, Sonlin's entrepreneurial spirit continued to flourish. He diversified his portfolio, becoming an active founding member or investor in nearly 10 different businesses. This expansion opened up new opportunities for Sonlin, including a role as a mentor. He now actively coaches startups, helping them refine their business models, establish go-to-market strategies, and secure venture capital funding. Sonlin's expertise and guidance enable these startups to expand their reach and cater to a broader customer base.

Sonlin's passion for cutting-edge technologies and innovative financial solutions led him to co-write and publish his first book, "Blockchain Explained: Your Ultimate Guide to the Tokenization of Finance." This comprehensive guide distills over seven years of experience and countless hours of conversations with industry professionals, regulators, and academics. Sonlin aims to demystify blockchain technology, providing practical insights for aspiring financial professionals who want to stay ahead of the curve in the rapidly evolving world of finance.

Sonlin credits Germantown Academy for playing a pivotal role in shaping his journey and preparing him for the challenges he would face in the real world. The supportive and flexible learning environment cultivated by the GA faculty and staff empowered Sonlin to embrace his unique learning style. As a young professional, Sonlin thrived in an environment that set high expectations while allowing him the freedom to explore his own path. This experience instilled in him the ability to prioritize and set goals, learn from mistakes, and witness the fruits of his labor in various aspects of his life. Reflecting on his time at GA, Sonlin expresses gratitude for the attention, encouragement, and freedom he received as a student. The skills and mindset fostered at GA continue to serve Sonlin well as he navigates the complex world of entrepreneurship.

"GA's ability to treat every student as a young professional, setting high expectations while allowing higher degrees of flexibility and freedom, allowed me to learn to set my own priorities and goals, learn and grow from mistakes in a controlled and constructive environment, and see the fruits of my labor play out across many aspects of my life." - Kyle Sonlin '15

Sonlin's dedication to paying it forward is exemplified through his mentorship of Marcus Scharf ’21, founder of Hyp. Sonlin's own experience of being mentored by successful entrepreneur Mason Wartman ’06 inspired him to offer guidance and support to the next generation. Scharf, with his ambition and achievements in the fashion industry, sought Sonlin's advice on positioning Hyp as a mature company, while he himself was still young. The mentorship experience involved discussions on various topics, ranging from business strategy to personal development and stress management. Working with Scharf marked a significant milestone in Sonlin's career, as he realized the full circle of mentorship, passing on the knowledge he had received just a few years prior.

With his wealth of experience and expertise, Sonlin has two valuable pieces of advice for GA students:

1. Network with Purpose

Sonlin emphasizes the importance of networking and building strong professional connections. He encourages students to utilize platforms like LinkedIn to reach out to industry professionals, thought leaders, and venture capitalists. By engaging in meaningful conversations and showcasing their curiosity, students can build a robust network that opens doors to new opportunities. Sonlin himself spent hours connecting with professionals who inspired him, leading to valuable connections, guidance, and even job prospects. He believes that a strong outreach strategy can give graduates a competitive edge in their job search.

2. Build Your Track Record

For aspiring entrepreneurs and self-starters, Sonlin advocates for creating professional content to establish a personal brand and expertise. Whether through writing on platforms like Medium or maintaining a personal blog, sharing insights and experiences can help build credibility and attract clients. Sonlin advises consistency in content creation, as it leads to compounding effects over time. By documenting their journey and offering valuable perspectives, graduates can develop skills in sales, leadership, and client management that are crucial for building a successful business.

Sonlin's passion for making a difference extends beyond his entrepreneurial pursuits. He recognizes that many individuals are eager to work hard and have a positive impact but may lack guidance or opportunities. Sonlin extends an open invitation to anyone seeking advice or productive ways to challenge themselves and change the world. "Feel free to reach out to me personally on social media or via email kyle@sonlinventures.com.
