Don McPherson Inspires Germantown Academy Community with Message on Aspirational Masculinity

It was a night of powerful reflection and meaningful dialogue at Germantown Academy as former NFL quarterback and longtime social advocate Don McPherson visited campus to speak about aspirational masculinity—a topic that resonated deeply with students, parents, and educators alike.

The evening, made possible by the Ross Health & Wellness Endowment Fund, was introduced by Leigh Serra, GA’s Director of Health and Wellness. Serra set the tone by highlighting the importance of McPherson’s message in today’s cultural landscape.

“As parents, educators, and caregivers,” Serra said, “we know that our children are constantly absorbing messages about what it means to be a man or a woman—from the media, their peers, and the world around them. Too often, the loudest voices in our culture reinforce limiting and even harmful definitions of manhood.”

Serra noted that these stereotypes can manifest in many ways—from locker room talk to emotional detachment—and that Germantown Academy is committed to helping students become emotionally intelligent, respectful, and self-aware individuals.

Enter Don McPherson.

A former All-American quarterback at Syracuse University who went on to play professionally for both the NFL and CFL—including a stint with the Philadelphia Eagles—McPherson has spent the past three decades redefining what it means to be a man. His work challenges traditional notions of masculinity and offers a broader, healthier model that embraces empathy, vulnerability, accountability, and respect.

Throughout the evening, McPherson engaged the GA community in a thought-provoking conversation that went far beyond sports. Drawing from personal experience and decades of advocacy, he explored how cultural definitions of masculinity can limit young men’s emotional expression and affect their relationships, sense of self, and behavior.

He urged the audience to reconsider how we define strength and leadership and to think critically about the messages we’re sending through media, institutions, and daily interactions.

“Don’t tell boys what not to be,” McPherson shared. “Show them what they can be.”

Earlier in the evening, McPherson also sat down for a special dinner and conversation with GA’s male coaches. The gathering created space for honest discussion about the role of coaches in shaping young men and fostering emotional intelligence through athletics.

“Having Don McPherson on campus was game-changing,” said head football coach Kyle Donahue ’14. “Hearing Don speak about topics that often go unaddressed—especially concerning the kind of men we aspire to be—was incredibly impactful. His honest and thoughtful message challenged us to grow as individuals, both on and off the field. GA Football is excited to rise to that challenge!”

For Germantown Academy, the event was a powerful reminder of the work that still lies ahead in shaping a more inclusive and emotionally healthy future for all students. Thanks to McPherson’s guidance, that future feels a little more hopeful.
