Art for Community Club Creates Kindness Rocks

The Middle School Art for Community Club has been hard at work with their own Kindness Rocks Project, painting river rocks with messages of kindness, hope, acceptance and inclusion as well as hilarious puns and witty humor. The idea was brought to the club by advisor Liz Buckman after she saw a painted rock on a friends' social media post. (SEE PHOTOS)

The Kindness Rocks Project states its purpose is "to cultivate connections within communities and lift others up through simple acts of kindness." The goal in this project is to share these rocks with the entire GA community. Club members placed the rocks in the Academic Courtyard last week (on the lone warm day), and for two weeks, Lower School art teacher Alia Tahvildaran brought her Kindergarten classes out to the courtyard to build and play with these rocks (the Kindergarteners also helped paint the backgrounds on some of the rocks!).

"As soon as we walked into the Academic Courtyard they knew exactly what to do!" said Tahvildaran. "They couldn't wait to gather and play with the bright, colorful rocks. They especially loved stacking and rearranging them with their Middle School friends."

Next week the rocks will be moved to various locations around campus. Using the map that Buckman drew, club members and other Middle School art students will move these rocks to various locations around campus. They will then be responsible for plotting the places that they put their rocks on the map. Once the individual maps are complete, Buckman will compile all of the information onto one master map that will be sent to the entire GA community. Teachers are free to use this map in any way they please - it could be used as a scavenger hunt for students to find, count and enjoy rocks.

"I hope that when students do find the rocks that they read them, enjoy them and that they add to the natural beauty of our campus," said Buckman.
