A Day of Learning, Service, and Community in the Upper School

Last week, Upper School students spent the day engaging in a variety of experiences, both on and off campus, designed to foster community, connection, and growth.

Dean of Students Steve Moll first organized this schedule in 2024 to create meaningful opportunities for every grade level while juniors and seniors were off campus for the PSATs. What began as an experiment has since become a new GA tradition.

Tenth graders enjoyed a day together at the Philadelphia Zoo, juniors explored history and civic engagement at the National Constitution Center under the direction of History Teacher and Department Chair Julie Kimmel, and seniors used the day to focus on their college applications.

Meanwhile, the freshman class took part in the 9th Grade Day of Service, an initiative that formally introduces community service to the newest members of the Upper School. In partnership with History Teacher and Director of CSO Bob Moyer, GA connected with four organizations -- Gemma Services, Cradles to Crayons, One House At A Time, and Carversville Farm Foundation.

On campus in the Field House, students worked alongside Gemma Services for a “buddy day,” assembling candy bags for children at CHOP in a project led by Mallea Kelly '27. Other groups traveled to community partners across the region, lending their time and energy to support local families and organizations.

“It was a positive experience for both students and faculty,” said Moll. “Every ninth grader had the opportunity to get involved with community service, and that’s something we’re proud to continue each year.”

Through shared experiences, from service to exploration, GA’s Upper School continues to build a strong sense of community and purpose.
