College Admission in a Covid Year

Even during these uncertain times, Germantown Academy seniors are beginning to identify where they will be spending their next school year. As of February 24, 38% of the Class of 2021 (133 students) has enrolled in a college via Early Decision, Early Action, or rolling admission. As for the rest of the class, we have seen more students than typical being deferred by early programs and are awaiting news in March or April.

As a nationwide trend, we are expecting regular decision at the most selective colleges to be uber selective as a result of extreme application growth stemming from the waiver of standardized testing scores and the limitations on visiting college campuses in-person. We also anticipate an increase in the use of wait lists by the most selective colleges, since students have increased the number of colleges to which they have applied. Beyond the top 200 colleges, the admission landscape looks vastly different with colleges extending deadlines to ensure a large enough applicant pool to hit their class goals. Both Common Application data and FASFA completion data reveal that applications among low-income students are down significantly, largely attributed to the pandemic.

As of this writing (February 2021), our students have enrolled in the following colleges and universities:
