8 GreAt Questions

Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760 kicks off our new series, 8 GreAt Questions, focused on finding out what is going on at GA from the people behind the masks.

What has been the hardest part of your job since the school year began?

Not getting to see students nearly as much in person or teachers working their magic given cautiousness around physical distancing.

What has brought you joy?

Every single day we’ve been able to be on campus.

Watching students explore and express their talents even under dire circumstances.

What is the most significant change GA has made this year to keep the community safe?

Adding dozens of teachers and about 100 extra sections across the entire school in order to reduce class sizes and increase distancing.

Zoom has become a way of life. What is the best background screen you have seen so far?

One of my students last spring found the video of the enacted dialogues from our German textbook online and had it as his background. The graphic was of a German student in a circa 1990 jeans jacket pushing his moped into the school courtyard.

What are you looking forward to most during the holiday season?

Beautiful vistas in secluded settings.

How many bow ties do you own?

60-ish.

Favorite quote to help you get through a tough time?

There are SO many, but here are two:

All I can do is the best I can do (likely recited about 1,759 times since March 8)

I’ve also taken to borrowing one from a gifted colleague: The pandemic is bringing out the "most" in people (interpret as you choose!)

What are you currently reading?

I have a huge pile ready for the picking over Thanksgiving. Top of the pile is Irish writer Tana French’s new mystery, The Searcher.
