FORT WASHINGTON -- Germantown Academy has a long history of churning out All-Americans in the pool, but for such a storied program, the group has not had a diver earn the honor in quite a while. In fact, the last GA diver to claim All-American status was Jeff Cragg '08 in 2008. However, the Patriots snapped that drought on July 1 when Libby Brewer '25, Laurel DePolo '25, and Brendan Hodgens '24 were named National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association All-Americans for the 2022-23 season.
The distinction wraps a fantastic year for the three divers, who also become the first diving All-Americans under Coach Tom Henninger '07.
Brewer opened the season on Dec. 6 by setting the Lawrenceville School pool record in the 1mtr Dive with a score of 266.10 and never looked backed. In the six dual meets in which she competed, Brewer won the event five times. After placing third at the Inter-Ac League Championships, Brewer scored a 438.15 at Easterns Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships to take home the gold and become the first female diver from GA to win the event at Easterns.
DePolo dove in seven dual meets during the 2022-23 season, finishing in the top-three at every competition and claiming first twice. The rising junior claimed the top spot at League Championships by .80 points and followed that up with a second-place finish at Easterns.
Like Brewer, Hodgens started the year with a bang and stayed hot throughout the season. After setting the Lawrenceville School pool record in the 1mtr Dive with a 301.88 to start the season, Hodgens finished first in the event at the next four dual meets. He closed the regular season with a trio of second-place performances against Haverford School, and at League Championships and Easterns.
"They still have so much potential," Henninger said at the end of the season. "They all still have so much room to grow and they're learning big dives. I have a great appreciation for them. They've worked so hard to get to where they are at the high school meets, Inter-Ac's and Easterns."
