Hess (20 saves), Germantown Academy stop Penn Charter, 9-8 | Chris Goldberg

STORY WRITTEN BY CHRIS GOLDBERG, PHILLY LACROSSE - APRIL. 25, 2023

Germantown Academy’s Sadie Hess knows for Germantown Academy to win games in the rugged Inter-Ac League, mistakes have to be kept to a minimum.

“We know we have to give 100% all the time in the Inter-Ac,” said the sophomore goalie. “The competition is at such a high level that the smallest mistakes made are always exploited. Staying focused and positive is really the key for us, as well as truly having each other’s backs and putting trust in each other.”

GA placed a lot of trust in Hess today. She made 20 saves and helped the Patriots rally for a stunning 9-8 win over the No. 5 ranked team by Phillylacrosse.com.

The Patriots (5-3 overall) improved to 2-3 in the Inter-Ac; Penn Charter (8-6) fell to 2-3.

The Quakers led, 6-3, at the half and were up 8-7 late until Sydney Wanner (1G, 1A, 5DC, 1CT) tied it. Then with 22 seconds left, Emma Goodwin (2G, 1A, 2DC, 1CT) scored the game-winner.

Maggie Borek (2G, 2A, 3CT) and Mia Raven (2G, 4DC, 1GB, 1INT, 1CT) also had big games for the Patriots while Lucia Smigiel (1G, 1DC, 1GB) and Sarah Marvin (1G, 3GB) were key contributors.

Hess was particularly strong in the second half.

“I was really locked in going into the game,” she said. “I kept my focus the whole time and was able to see the shots well. My defense did an incredible job protecting me and once we got a rhythm going we just continued to fight.

“We knew we had it in us and this was completely a team win and it felt so good to come back after the half. We had an extra fire in us and wanted this win so bad. All of my teammates gave 100% and we know the work we have put in led us to this win.”

Kayla Joyce was strong in goal for the Quakers with 15 saves. Key contributors for PC included Grace Walter (3G 1CT),  Bea Buckley (2G 3A 4GB 2CT), Aditi Foster (1G 5GB 2CT), Harbor Campbell (1G 2GB 2CT), Alex Glomb (1G 2GB 1CT 1DC) and Gracie Shoup (3A 6GB 1CT 5DC).

“Credit to PC for being a very disciplined and well coached team,” said Hess. “I have confidence we can continue to do that and have a great second half of the season!

“Every win in the Inter-Ac is a great win. We have a long standing rivalry with Penn Charter and lost by one on that field a year ago, so this was particularly sweet.”
