Girls Track and Field: Patriots Win Inter-Ac Finals!

FORT WASHINGTON—Germantown Academy won the 2021 Inter-Ac League Girls Track & Field Finals on Saturday, May 22 at Carey Stadium. The Patriots scored 130 points to beat out The Episcopal Academy (118), Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (85), Academy of Notre Dame de Namur (75), William Penn Charter School (69), Agnes Irwin School, and The Baldwin School (2).

"Our girls had a phenomenal day on Saturday," said Head Coach Dion Lehman. "When I pre-scored the meet based on the entries seeds, we were behind EA by a few points, so I knew we’d need a big day in order to come out on top. Across the board, girls stepped up and outperformed their seeds, and we really gained momentum as the day went on."

Individually, GA was led by Moforehan Abinusawa '22, who took first place in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, Sarah Fineman 21, who placed first in the discus event and the shot put, and Fiona McKee '23, who won the high jump, long jump, and 100-meter hurdles.

"It’s really hard to start mentioning outstanding performances because there were so just so many," said Lehman. "When it comes to a championship meet, every performance matters and every point matters. That being said, Fiona McKenna’s three first place finishes (high jump, long jump, and 100-meter hurdles) and her leg on the 4x100-meter team earned her the Athlete of the Meet recognition and certainly made a big impact on our team score."

GA's 4x100 relay took second place, but, in the final event of the day, the Patriots' 4x400 relay came out on top and clocked in at 4:02.31 to beat Notre Dame (4:03.57) and set a new school record in the process.

"There’s nothing more exciting than a meet coming down to the 4x400-meter relay," said Lehman. "We entered the relay with a slight lead, so as long as we stayed ahead of Episcopal, the team title was ours. The four girls on the relay team all had extremely tired legs from previous events, but they are a special group and I had supreme confidence that they would step up to the occasion. In fact, right before they ran I quickly double checked the school record, because I was pretty confident that they had a good shot at it. Sure enough, their time of 4:02.31 was a new record by four seconds! It was the cherry on top of an already incredible day."
