Girls Swimming: Emma Atkinson '20 Named to 2019-2020 U.S. National Junior Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO—Germantown Academy senior Emma Atkinson '20 was named to the 2019-2020 U.S. National Junior Team on Wednesday,  September 11, 2019.

"Wow! What more can we say?" said GA Boys and Girls Varsity Coach Jeff Thompson, who also serves as the Director of the GA Aquatic Club. "Emma has enjoyed quite a year! Two GA school records, two GA pool records, two Easterns titles, named a Swimming All-American, achieved four U.S. Olympic Trial time standards, won an 18-and-Under National Championship, and now she’s been named to the U.S. National Junior Team—that’s quite a year. Congratulations to Emma, her parents, and to all of her teammates. Emma knows that it takes team work to make dreams work – she’s an amazing teammate and she makes everyone around her better."

Atkinson is one of 83 youth swimmers from across the country named to the squad. She will compete in the 200-meter freestyle, 800-meter freestyle, and 200-meter backstroke.

"Looking at this roster, there is a lot to be excited about,” USA Swimming National Junior Team Director Mitch Dalton said. “In addition to the nineteen of our eighteen-and-under athletes who qualified for the National Team, the talent on this year’s National Junior Team shows that club coaches and athletes are gearing up for an exciting Olympic year. I look forward to seeing what this group can accomplish in Omaha and beyond."

Selection procedures for the 2019-2020 U.S. National Junior Team are available at usaswimming.org. Open Water National Junior Team roster spots are based off the top-six men and top-six women from the 2019 USA Swimming 10K National Championships. Top finishers must also meet the general criteria for the qualification to the National Junior Team.
