Germantown Academy’s Gabby Bowes Shines at All Star Labor Classic

PHILADELPHIA -- Germantown Academy standout Gabby Bowes '25 was among five local high school basketball players who took part in Sunday’s Philadelphia Building Trades’ All Star Labor Classic, held at Holy Family University.

Bowes, a Millersville University commit, represented the Suburban Girls team, which earned a 76–69 victory over the City Girls in the annual showcase. The event featured top talent from around the region and was not only a celebration of high school basketball, but also a day dedicated to giving back. All participating high school athletes, including Bowes, received a $500 college scholarship.

The day opened with a fun-spirited matchup between the Labor All Stars and the Media/Alumni/Elected Officials All Stars. Retired Channel 6 Action News reporter Vernon Odom coached the Media/Alumni/Elected Officials, while Wayne Miller, business manager of Sprinkler Fitters Local 692, led the Labor team. Labor claimed a 61–60 win after members of The Superhero Project came onto the court in the final seconds to make the game-winning shots.

The Building Trades presented a $228,000 check to The Superhero Project, a nonprofit that supports parents of premature babies and newborns facing medical challenges.

Among the familiar faces who suited up for the Media/Alumni/Elected Officials team were district attorney candidate Pat Dugan; state Rep. Sean Dougherty; City Councilmen Jim Harrity and Isaiah Thomas; former state Sen. Jimmy Dillon; and Northeast Times editor Tom Waring. Sisters Carleigh and Aubree Brown—Nazareth Academy and Archbishop Wood alums who went on to play at Rider and Drexel, respectively—also took part.

Mayor Cherelle Parker tossed up the opening tip before the first game, with Holy Family President Dr. Anne Prisco and Wayne Miller handling tip-off honors for the girls and boys games, respectively.
