Fort Washington – Germantown Academy Director of Athletics Tim Ginter has named Steve Moll as the new Head Coach of Varsity Track & Field for both the winter and spring seasons.
“For as long as Steve has been here, he has shown there is nothing more important than the success of GA and its student-athletes,” Ginter said. “Whether as a math teacher, House Head, football coach, or with track and field, he has shown a willingness to do whatever is needed for the greater good. The students love him and his peers respect him, and that makes him yet another perfect example of why the teacher-coach model can be so beneficial. He is an excellent choice to continue building on what Coach (Dion) Lehman had accomplished and lead this program forward.”
During his time in Fort Washington, Moll has had a few different roles with the track & field teams. While he cut his teeth as the throwing coach, Moll was also the pole vault coach last spring and has helped fill in other roles as needed. He also has helped with scheduling and planning the trajectory of the program. Moll has served in almost every coaching position for the Patriots football team as well.
A member of the Patriots’ track & field staff since 2013, Moll has coached Germantown Academy student-athletes to several school records in throwing events. The Patriots have become a force to be reckoned with in the Inter-Ac League as well as the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association.
Student-athletes have been named Inter-Ac Champions 11 times, Outdoor PAISAA Champions eight times, and Indoor PAISAA Champions four times during Moll’s tenure with the track & field team. Most recently, Germantown Academy had 10 top-10 finishes at the PAISAA Championships, and 15 such finishes at the Inter-Ac Championship Meet in 2022.
Under Moll’s guidance during the 2018 and 2019 outdoor season, Meaghan Toscano ’20 set Inter-Ac records in the girls shot put, discus and javelin, and PAISAA records in the girls shot put and discus. Olatide Abinusawa ’19 set the mark in the boys discus in 2018.
“I’ve had a great opportunity to grow the throwing program,” Moll said. “We started building a connection between the Middle and Upper School throwers years back. Twice a week, Upper School athletes are collaborating with me to coach and mentor the Middle School athletes. Working with both divisions has developed unity in the GA track and field program. This type of work is what I am most passionate about. My goal is to expand this model to include all events.”
Last season, Germantown Academy girls finished third in the Inter-Ac (spring) while the boys took fourth. The girls track & field team most recently claimed the Inter-Ac title in 2021, after winning it in 2019 along with the PAISAA crown. The boys won the league in 2016 and swept the league and PAISAA titles in 2018.
