Swimming & Diving: Coach Matt Cox '07 Named One of Nation’s Top 25 Age-Group Coaches

FORT WASHINGTON -- From Germantown Academy student-athlete to nationally recognized coach, Matt Cox ’07 is making waves in and out of the pool. In the early goings of July, Cox was named one of the Top 25 Age-Group Coaches of the Year in the small team category by the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) and Fitter & Faster—an honor that highlights his exceptional work developing young swimmers at Germantown Academy Aquatic Club (GAAC). The recognition is based on national performance data for athletes ages 10–14, and puts Cox among the top youth swim coaches in the country.

Over nearly a decade with GAAC, Cox has played a central role in elevating the program. Under his leadership, club membership has grown from 25 to over 100 swimmers, and GA has seen a consistent rise in performance and retention—surpassing national averages in six of the last seven years. He established key developmental progressions, restructured the aquatics schedule to maximize training opportunities, and built a strong communication system to keep families informed and engaged.

At the varsity level, Cox has helped coach 11 athletes who broke 29 school records and contributed to multiple Inter-Ac League championships. He also played a critical role in leading GA to combined team titles at the Easterns Championships in 2022 and 2024. His deep understanding of the sport, coupled with a passion for mentoring student-athletes, has made a lasting impact on Germantown Academy’s aquatics program.
