9th Annual Chinese New Year
9th Annual Chinese New Year

On Saturday, February 9, the Germantown Academy community celebrated the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival. Officially starting on February 5, the spring festival lasts for two weeks, and each year is marked by a sign of the Chinese Zodiac. 2019 is the year of the pig!

Students from all divisions performed skits, dances, songs and jokes for their family and friends before enjoying a delicious Chinese buffet and participating in cultural activities like calligraphy and origami. Highlights included an opening Lion Dance from the 9th grade class and a closing Ribbon Dance from the Lower School students.

During the program, Director of Community Chinese Programs Susan Xuan Amorosi presented Head of School Rich Schellhas with a plaque in honor of the school's selection as Confucius Classroom of the Year. This is the second time in nine years that GA has won the award, one of only five schools out of more than 1,000 worldwide to receive the honor this year.

GA holds the distinction of being the first Confucius Classroom in Pennsylvania, made possible through a partnership with Hanban, the Office of Chinese Language Council International, and Capital Normal University High School in Beijing.

Since 2009, GA has implemented Mandarin Chinese language instruction across all divisions, built community through annual New Year celebrations, conducted public classes for children and adults, administered official language tests, and even established a college counseling center in Beijing for students applying to colleges in the United States.

Two parent volunteers were recognized during the presentation, Chuck Rong and Cicy Chen, for their years of faithful service to GA's Chinese program.

Special thanks go to Director of Chinese Curriculum Bertina Hsu-Miller, as well as teachers Tsung Tsai, Jarrett Anderson, and Sally Rong. The hard work they put in with their students really showed.

Thanks also go to Master Matt Xichuan Zhang and his Tai Chi class, as well as Vivian Zheng and Lin Zhou.
