Wrestling: Chris Kim '20 Makes History, GA Wrestlers Qualify for Nationals

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

MILL HALL -- Central Mountain High School played host to the Pennsylvania Freestyle and Greco Roman State Championships on May 17-19. A total of eight Germantown Academy student athletes made the trip with five of them finishing as placewinners.

Chris Kim '20 finished first in the Freestyle category of his weight class, winning his quarterfinal and semifinal matches by fall. Kim then won the championship bout by decision, 4-1. He also took first in Greco Roman, winning his first two bouts by technical fall before taking the championship by fall.

Kim also became the first Germantown Academy wrestler to win six consecutive state-level titles, winning the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Wrestling Tournament, Freestyle States and Greco Roman States in each of the past two years.

Christian Colman '21 placed first overall in Greco Roman at 132 pounds. He won by fall, technical fall and finally, by decision, 9-6.

Wyatt Hare '20 finished second in Greco Roman in his weight class, winning all three of his matches by technical fall. Harrison Levans '21 took third in both Greco Roman and Freestyle at 220 pounds. Head Coach Solomon Fleckman said that Levans also did well two weeks ago at the Northeast Regionals at East Stroudsburg University. Sami Cerebe '21 finished fourth in Greco Roman.

With such positive results also comes more rewards. Those who placed in the top four at Northeast Regionals automatically qualify for the National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, as do those who place in the top three at states. After the finalization of the Pennsylvania’s National Freestyle & Greco Roman Teams, Cerebe was granted a slot on the Greco Roman team.

Just a year ago, a total of five wrestlers made the trip to Fargo. As of now, five current GA athletes -- Levans, Kim, Colman, Cerebe and Hare -- and six athletes overall are qualified for Nationals, proof of the hard work and positive growth occurring at Germantown Academy.
