STATE COLLEGE -- As the winter months wind down, so does the indoor track & field season. Only one meet remains on the schedule now that the Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association (PTFCA) Indoor State Championship has concluded. However, that does not mean that the performances put together at that meet will be forgotten.

Germantown Academy had three student-athletes travel to Penn State on Feb. 25 to compete at the event. Of the three, two athletes were able to put together top-five finishes.

Caleb Johnson '19 took second place in the pole vault with a result of 16'. The junior broke his own school record by over 11 inches in the process. 

"Caleb’s performance was nothing less than phenomenal," Assistant Coach Lawrence Johnson said. "Anything at 16 feet or beyond indicates  a world class and Olympic potential in the pole vault. In a discipline that normally sees improvements in increments of 2-3 inches, Caleb improved by almost one foot in a single competition."

Johnson's performance equaled the Pennsylvania state winner while also becoming one of the top-five all-time Indoor marks in the state of Pennsylvania. He fell only 3 inches below the all-time state record.

In his first state meet, Olatide Abinusawa '19 entered as the eighth seed, but took fourth in the boys shot put with a throw of 53' 3.25". The throw was just a few inches short of Abinusawa's personal best of 53' 4". 

Meanwhile, Meaghan Toscano '20 placed 13th in the girls shot put with a 37' 3.25" throw. Toscano was making her second appearance at states and was the youngest female thrower. Moll said that this season was a good experience for Toscano, who has been working on a new throwing technique since June.  

"I am very proud of both Meaghan and Ola," Throwing Coach Steve Moll said. "Their dedication to the sport and great team attitude represent exactly what we want to see from GA athletes. It was a fun indoor season, I am excited for the spring, and fortunately none of our throwers are seniors so we at least get one more year with these elite athletes who rank among the best in the state."

The lone remaining meet on GA's schedule is the New Balance Indoor Nationals on March 10. They will be held at the Armory Track in New York.
