Swimming: GAAC Swimmers Shine at Eastern Zone Championships

BUFFALO, NEW YORK—The Germantown Academy Aquatic Club (GAAC) finished 16th overall at the Eastern Zone Swimming Long Course Championships. The meet took place from Thursday, August 1-Sunday, August 4.

Nicole Ranile '22, Emily Thompson '19, Averi Webb '22, JJ Freeman '23, Griffin Henze '21, Jack Lafond '19, Jack Maketa '22, and Zach Spain '20 all represented GAAC in Buffalo.

Day 1 Highlights:

  • Zach Spain '20 placed 5th in the men’s 800 freestyle (USA Swimming Futures Time Standard)
     
  • Jack Lafond '19 placed 18th in the men’s 100 breaststroke
     
  • Jack Maketa '22 placed 17th in the men’s 200 IM

Day 2 Highlights:

  • Jack Maketa '22 placed 9th in the men’s 200 freestyle and 17th in the men’s 100 butterfly
     
  • Nicole Ranile '22 placed 17th in the women’s 100 butterfly (NCSA Junior National Time Standard)
     
  • Griffin Henze '21 placed 19th in the men’s 100 butterfly (NCSA Junior National Time Standard)
     
  • Emily Thompson '19 placed 20th in the women’s 400 IM
     
  • The men’s 400 freestyle relay, composed of Jack Maketa '22, JJ Freeman '23, Griffin Henze '21, and Zach Spain '20, placed 8th

Day 3 Highlights:

  • JJ Freeman '23 placed 18th in the men’s 400 freestyle
     
  • Griffin Henze '21 placed 9th in the men’s 200 butterfly (NCSA Junior National Time Standard) and 17th in the men’s 400 freestyle
     
  • Jack Maketa '22 placed 3rd overall in the men’s 200 meter butterfly (USA Swimming Winter Junior National Time Standard) and he placed 3rd overall in the men’s 400 freestyle
     
  • Nicole Ranile '22 placed 6th overall in the women’s 200 butterfly (NCSA Junior National Time Standard)
     
  • Zach Spain '20 placed 22nd overall in the men’s 400 freestyle
     
  • Emily Thompson '19 placed 16th overall in the women’s 200 butterfly
     
  • The men’s 800 freestyle relay, composed of Griffin Henze '21, Zach Spain '20, JJ Freeman '23, and Jack Maketa '22 placed 5th

Day 4 Highlights:

  • Jack Lafond '19 placed 13th overall in the men’s 200 breaststroke
     
  • Zach Spain '20 placed 6th overall in the men’s 1,500 freestyle

"This is an outstanding showing by our student-athletes given the size of the teams that we competed against were much larger in number that ours," said Director of GAAC Jeff Thompson."We are small, but we are mighty. Zach Spain achieved his first USA Swimming Futures time standard at the competition in the 800-meter freestyle. Griffin Henze and Nicole Ranile both achieved their first NCSA Junior National time standards in the 100 and 200-meter butterfly. Jack Maketa achieved his first USA Swimming Winter Junior National time standard in the 200-meter butterfly."
