Ice Hockey: Germantown Academy Stays Composed, Moves Past Pennington

COLMAR, PA -- It has been a busy week for Germantown Academy's varsity ice hockey team. The Patriots have already played two games this week, but still have another coming up on Friday. With such a schedule, it would be easy to look past an opponent. However, GA did no such thing.

Playing their second game in as many days yesterday, the Patriots took care of The Pennington School, 7-3. The contest was chippy to say the least, but GA kept their composure and were able to reel off its seventh straight win.

Germantown Academy scored first thanks to a short-handed, unassisted goal by Walker Schwartz '23. Less than a minute later and still undermanned, Walker set up Drew Schwartz '23 for the second goal of the game. GA closed out the period without allowing a score.

"I thought the game went pretty well," goaltender Dominic Saputelli '23 said. "It was a little physical, but definitely a fun game. I think we were engaged the entire time and got a couple shots through."

After finishing the first period on a power play, GA began the second period down a man once again. However this time they paid for it as Pennington managed to get its first score of the game at the 11:09 mark in the period. Five minutes later, the Patriots answered with a goal from Arman Aloian '25, his first career score.

Pennington would add another with 2:54 left in the period to make it a 3-2 game. Just like before, GA had an answer. A goal by Colin Rink '24 with 33 seconds left in the frame gave the home team a 4-2 lead heading into the final period.

Both teams began the third with only four players on the ice. Declan Connaughton '23 took full advantage of the opportunity, scoring his first career goal with 11:45 to play in the game. Pennington would respond just 30 seconds later, but it was the last score that the team could muster. GA added two scores in the final six minutes of play to bring the game to its end.

"We just need to finish a little bit more and not put ourselves in a situation where the game is tighter than it needed to be," Head Coach Matt Rominger said. "I think it's good for us to have those kind of tests and not having one recently, you can see we might not be accustomed to responding to moments of stress or duress. Thankfully we didn't have to play from behind and we maintained our lead, but it was closer than it needed to be."

The Patriots are now 9-1 overall and 7-0 in league play. They close out the week with a contest against Academy of the New Church on Friday at 4:00 pm.
