Golf: Germantown Academy Heads to League Play After Undefeated Start

FORT WASHINGTON -- It has been a hot start to the season for the Varsity Coed Golf team at Germantown Academy. Following a 199-200 win over Holy Ghost Prep, the Patriots boast a 4-0 record with the first Inter-Ac League match, the William Penn Charter School Invitational, coming on Thursday, Sept. 14. After falling just short of repeating as League Champions in 2022, but winning the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association crown for the second season in a row, the Patriots have similar expectations in 2023.

"As a team we have our sights set on another League and PAISAA title," Co-captain and reigning league MVP Ajeet Bagga '24 said. "I feel that the team has a really good chance this year. However, we know that this will be difficult, and that we will have to play our best golf in order to achieve this goal."

GA finished last season with an overall record of 22-8, just behind Malvern Prep, who won the title with a 25-5 mark. Bagga finished the season as the Inter-Ac Individual Champion, the first ever in Germantown Academy history. Despite the recent success, Bagga knows that the competition will be a grind.

"League play is where the best competition is," Bagga said. "It's a great test to see where you are individually and as a team. Additionally, Inter-Ac play definitely adds some nerves as you are not only playing one team, you are playing five."

Co-Captain Will Irons '24 agreed with Bagga's assessment and expectations for the team.

"The expectations are high this year and hopefully we can repeat our season two years ago where we won the Inter-Ac and states," Irons said. "In the league, all the matches are invitationals meaning all the teams in the league come to the course. You aren't playing with anyone from your school, whereas in the non-league matches we play with one teammate so it feels a little more casual."

Irons added that he is looking forward to the Patriots' invitational at Sunnybrook, since it  is a course that the team knows very well. Bagga has his eyes on the GA/PC Match at the end of the season.

The Patriots begin Inter-Ac play on Sept. 14 at 4pm.
