Girls Track & Field: GA Claims Third at League Championships

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

NEWTOWN SQUARE -- Many different athletes contributed points when Germantown Academy's girls track & field team competed at the Inter-Ac League Championships on May 12. The Patriots ended up in third place with 91 points, behind only Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (126) and Penn Charter (101). While they did not come out on top, Head Coach Peter Jennings was happy with the result.

"I feel great about the points we scored, breaking 90 is really good," Jennings said. "SCH is a powerful team, they were really good this year. We lost a lot of depth on the girls side this year, so we really needed everybody and we got everybody. Everyone here today found a way to contribute."

  • Those contributions started early with Sasha Capers '20. The sophomore placed fifth in the long jump with a 15' 2.75" leap and sixth in the triple jump with 30'.
  • Isabelle Goldstein '20 turned in one of the most exciting performances of the day in the 1600. With 500 to go, the sophomore was down about 40 meters, but ended up winning the event by over four seconds. Goldstein returned for the 3200 and won that event by seven seconds. GA has now won the 1600 for six straight years.
  • Pretty soon -- if not already -- Meaghan Toscano '20 will be known as the best female thrower in the Inter-Ac league. She destroyed the previous league mark in the discus (73' 3") with a throw of 122' 0.5", and broke her own league record in the shot put (36' 3.25") with a throw of 41' 10". Toscano also took first in the javelin with a throw of 82' 9".
  • Toscano was not the only thrower for GA earning points. Sarah Fineman '21 placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 28' 11.5". Although the events were not scored, Cianni Williams '20 and Olivia McMichael '20 took second and third in the discus, with McMichael also taking third in the javelin.
  • Quartnei Brown '21 finished first in the pole vault with a 10' jump. The next closest entrant jumped 9' 6". Mia Costonis '21 took third with a jump of 8' 6".
  • Kelsey O'Hara '18 finished third in both the 200 and 400 with times of 26.45 and 58.14, respectively. O'Hara, Goldstein, Anna Hennessy '18 and Dara Kaufman '21 made up the 4x400 relay team that finished second with a time of 4:06.22.
  • The Patriots had three athletes finish in the top six for the high jump in Molly Oeth '20, Destiny Mayfield '20 and Costonis. Oeth placed fourth with 4' 6" while the two others tied for sixth with 4'.

The team will be competing in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association Championships on May 19. That event will start at 9:00 a.m.
