Girls Lacrosse: Different Mentality Brings Positive Results for Patriots

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

FORT WASHINGTON -- After a tough road loss to Academy of Notre Dame on April 30, Germantown Academy's girls lacrosse team returned home to take on The Hill School on May 1. Unlike the contest against the Irish, the Patriots were able to share the ball and came away victorious, 16-6.

"I'm really happy about how the girls played," Head Coach Mary Dean said. "We really needed this win after yesterday. It brought back their confidence."

Dean said that the game yesterday was completely different from how the team played against Hill. The difference in the amount of assists proved her point.

"Yesterday we did not play as a team, we played by ourselves on attack," Dean said. "Yesterday we had three assists. Today we had 14 assists and I think that made a difference in the game."

Cameron Korman '19 distributed the ball very well, racking up eight assists on the day to go along with two goals. Her goal with 22:26 remaining in the first half opened the scoring for GA.

Hill answered seconds later, only for Olivia Doody '19 to scored three straight goals. Goals from Doody, Elise Smigiel '21, Korman, Mackenzie Smith '21 and Cassidy Palazzo '22 gave the Patriots an 11-5 halftime lead.

After the break it was all GA. The Patriots scored five goals compared to Hill's one and secured the result.

"It's all about their mentality," Dean said. "Today, I pulled into the parking lot and they were listening to music and dancing and were just excited for the game. Yesterday we were dragging our feet, it was hard to get through warm up and I think that absolutely made the difference in the games."

The Patriots are currently 5-6 overall. They will take on The Baldwin School on May 3, which will be their third game in four days. Dean said that they have been focusing more on their plays and what they need to do in games rather than conditioning, and that she hopes to repeat today's performance against the Bears.
