Girls Basketball: Upset-Minded SCH Falls Short to GA

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

FORT WASHINGTON -- Entering its matchup with Springside Chestnut Hill Academy on Jan. 17, the Germantown Academy girls basketball team was winning its Inter-Ac League games by an average of 26 points. Last year, the Patriots beat the Blue Devils by a combined 54 points, but things were different in the latest contest. Thanks to a fourth-quarter comeback, GA was able to defeat SCHA by the score of 54-44.

Maddie Vizza '20 led the Patriots in scoring with 19 points. The junior did most of her work from deep, hitting five three pointers in the contest. Since returning from New Orleans, Vizza is averaging almost 13 points per game. Elle Stauffer '20 came close to a double double, tallying 13 points and nine rebounds. Stauffer also added five steals and four assists.

The Patriots held a one-point lead after the first quarter, but wound up trailing at halftime. The Blue Devils outscored GA 13-11 in the second and held a 27-26 advantage going into the break. That lead was extended in the third and GA entered the final frame trailing 39-35.

However, SCH could not complete the upset. The Patriots scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to give themselves some breathing room and a 54-44 victory.

GA remains a perfect 18-0 on the season and is 5-0 in league play. They take on Miami Country Day School on Jan. 18 at 5:00 p.m. The Spartans are 16-1 this year and are currently ranked No. 5 nationally by MaxPreps.com.
