GIRLS BASKETBALL: Patriots Collect Second League Win Over Episcopal Academy

FORT WASHINGTON -- Germantown Academy's girls basketball team hosted Inter-Ac League foe Episcopal Academy on Jan. 18. Behind a well-balanced scoring attack, the Patriots were able to down the Churchwomen, 67-51.

Episcopal got the scoring started thirty seconds into the game and took an early 4-0 lead. However, thanks to Kendall Bennett '23 and Jessica Aponik '24, Germantown Academy quickly found its footing and outscored its opponent 15-8 over the final 6:20 of the quarter. Both Bennett and Aponik finished the quarter with six points.

The second quarter brought much of the same, as Isabella Casey '24 tallied six points of her own in the second frame. Gabby Bowes '25 had five while Bennett tacked on four more to her total. Jess Kolecki '25 added a three to give GA a 33-23 halftime lead.

By the end of the third quarter, the Patriots had a 52-41 advantage over Episcopal Academy. The Churchwomen got that lead down to seven with just under six minutes to go in the fourth, but were unable to get the necessary stops to overtake the home team. Germantown Academy drilled nine free-throws as time wound down to secure the victory.

Casey led all scorers with 21 points, while Bennett finished the day with 18. Bowes and Kolecki each tallied nine, while Aponik had six. Sam Wade '24 and Jenna Aponik '24 each had two points.

The Patriots move to 8-5 on the year and 2-2 in league play. Germantown Academy returns to action on Friday as they host William Penn Charter, looking to avenge a 58-48 loss from earlier this season. Since that matchup, the Patriots are 6-2 while the Quakers are 5-1.
