Girls Basketball: GA Falls to Shipley in PAISAA Semifinal

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

WEST CHESTER -- The latest installment of the budding rivalry between Germantown Academy and The Shipley School featured everything that a contest between two heavy weights should; multiple lead changes, large scoring runs and late-game drama. After converting two free throws with only seconds left, Shipley emerged with a 55-52 victory.

However, the game did not start out as close as the final score would suggest. Over the final five minutes in the first quarter, the Patriots were outscored 18-8, ultimately trailing Shipley 21-10 after the first quarter. However, that 11 point lead would be the Gators' largest of the game.

In the second, GA started their comeback. The team went on an 8-0 run to start the quarter and went into the half trailing, 29-25.

It was not until halfway through the third quarter that the Patriots took their first lead of the game. Jaye Haynes '20 tied things at 32 when she hit a three pointer with 4:14 in the quarter. Becca Booth '21 briefly put GA ahead with a basket with 3:32 remaining in the third. Booth would add two more buckets in the quarter as the teams entered the final frame tied at 38.

As the two teams battled it out in the final frame the lead changed hands 10 times and the score was tied on four occasions. With 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter, GA had the chance to take a one point lead. They inbounded the ball and from the top of the painted area lobbed the ball to a cutting Elle Stauffer '20, a play that had worked earlier in the game. However, this time had no such luck. After the Gators hit their free throws, the Patriots had a chance at a long three pointer, but the desperation heave did not fall.

Germantown Academy finishes the year with an overall record of 25-5 and an Inter-Ac League record of 12-0. The team also had every member of their starting five honored with league honors as Catherine Polisano '18 was Inter-Ac MVP, Stauffer and Haynes were First-Team All-Inter-Ac and Rachel Balzer '19 and Alexa Naessens '18 were Second-Team All-Inter-Ac.
