Germantown Academy Names Matthew Cox '07 Director of Aquatics

Germantown Academy Director of Athletics Tim Ginter announced the hiring of Matthew Cox '07 as the new Director of Aquatics. Cox has spent almost a decade at the Germantown Academy Aquatic Club (GAAC), where he has served as Head Age Group Coach and Senior Assistant. As Director of Aquatics, Cox will oversee both the varsity boys and girls swimming and diving teams, continuing to build on the programs’ legacy of excellence. A nationwide search was conducted with the help of DovetailED.

"In a search that included many strong candidates, Matt’s deep understanding of the program and his vision for its future led both the search committee and our students to the decision that he was the ideal choice for the role," Ginter said. "As an alum and current coach, he brings a unique perspective that enables him to inspire and engage members of both the Varsity and GAAC teams. His commitment to Germantown Academy and GA Aquatics will continue to foster a strong sense of unity and create lasting connections across the entire school community."

Cox has played a transformative role in the development of GAAC, where he established essential standards, progressions, and schedules for the age group program. His leadership extended to communication, including creating a weekly newsletter to keep parents informed and engaged in their children's progress. Cox also maximized pool usage by designing an aquatics schedule that balanced both swimming and diving. His dedication to the club's growth is reflected in his success in expanding membership from 25 to over 100 swimmers and attracting more families to GA. Cox has also maintained a retention rate above the national average for six of the last seven years.

At the varsity level, Cox has helped coach 11 athletes who broke 29 school records and contributed to multiple Inter-Ac League titles for both the GA boys' and girls' teams. He also assisted in guiding two teams to Easterns Championships combined team titles in 2022 and 2024.

“I am honored to be charged with leading the next generation of Germantown Academy Aquatics,” Cox said. “As an alum, I understand firsthand the impact this community had on shaping who I am today, and I look forward to telling the story of our proud program to new faces as we continue to grow. Lavino Pool will remain a place where committed student-athletes are challenged to become their best selves, both in and out of the water.”

Before joining GA, Cox served as the Assistant Swimming Coach at Upper Merion Aquatic Club, where he taught proper stroke mechanics to swimmers ages 6-18 and helped organize training groups. He also worked as a trainer at Summit Sports Training Center in Villanova, Pa. Cox is a member of Germantown Academy's Hall of Fame as part of the 2004 Boys Water Polo team. He swam collegiately at Penn State, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology. Cox also holds a Master of Education with a specialization in Counseling Psychology, focusing on Positive Coaching.
