Germantown Academy Names John Bernhardt Varsity Baseball Coach

FORT WASHINGTON — Germantown Academy Director of Athletics and former Varsity Baseball Coach Tim Ginter has announced the hiring of John Bernhardt as the new Head Coach for Varsity Baseball. Bernhardt will also serve as an Associate Teacher in the Lower School.

"Throughout the interview process, we were looking for someone who would be capable of taking a competitive team to the next level," Ginter said. "After spending time with John and getting an opportunity to hear his vision for the program, we believe we have found the right person for this job. His energy, positive attitude, and his ability to make connections with the players will serve him well in this new role. We are all excited about this next era of GA baseball.”

Bernhardt arrives in Fort Washington after serving as the assistant coach and pitching coach for Holy Ghost Prep, as well as handling head coaching duties for the Philly Bandits 16U Team since 2018. Bernhardt helped lead Holy Ghost to Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District 1 titles in 2019 and 2021 while working with pitchers to teach proper throwing mechanics and development of pitches. Holy Ghost also advanced to the State Quarterfinals in 2021. No stranger to Inter-Ac athletics, he also served as the head coach for Varsity Girls Basketball at The Baldwin School.

As a student-athlete at Chestnut Hill College, Bernhardt was a four-year member of the baseball team and was named to Chestnut Hill College's Dean's List and Athletic Honor Roll. He was also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and Kappa Delta Epsilon Honor Society. Bernhardt graduated in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in special education.

"To say I am extremely excited to be joining the Germantown Academy community is an understatement," Bernhardt said. "When I stepped on campus for the first time, I knew GA was the place I wanted to be. The school has such a rich academic and athletic tradition, and I could not be more excited to lend to that tradition. When it comes to baseball, GA is one of the best programs in the area and competes in one of the most competitive leagues in the state. I cannot wait to hit the ground running and continue to help grow the program and the tradition of the Germantown Academy baseball program.

"I also cannot wait to join the Lower School and be part of the process of not just helping kids academically, but also to aid in their progression as people outside of the classroom.” Bernhardt continued. “GA’s unique focus on helping students be the best possible person they can be is truly special."

Outside of coaching, Bernhardt was a special education aide in the Upper School at St. Katherine's Day School and taught at Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Independence Charter School West. Most recently, Bernhardt served as an account executive for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. He also has experience as the Director of Travel Baseball and Team Sales for Maplezone Sports Institute, and the Director of Baseball Operations and Team Sales at Dugout of Chester County.

GA’s new coach will inherit a team that went 10-13 overall and 3-7 in Inter-Ac League play in 2022. The Patriots return 17 letterwinners and seven seniors, including First Team All-League performer Aidan Zakarewicz '23.
