GAme Of The Week: Meet Coach Nelson

What do you love about coaching at your school?

I love being part of the tradition at GA – the Girls Soccer program and the school at large.  We have a great history of athletics, and it’s fantastic to be a piece of that story.

Best coaching moment/memory?

One year we battled PC to overtime during GA/PC Day (eventually losing), but there was a massive crowd on the hill behind the soccer field. At one point, students started throwing baby powder in the air, and the sun was actually blurred out from the powder swirling above the pitch. It was an incredible experience for the team to play in front of such a great crowd!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

The only way out is through. When things aren’t going your way – in soccer or in life – you’ve just got to keep at it, you’ve got to go through it (and hopefully learn a thing or two along the way so you don’t have to repeat the lesson)!

What advice would you give to a Middle School student hoping to play your sport in Upper School?

Be flexible, and learn to play multiple positions. There is always someone out there just a bit bigger, faster, and stronger, and you have to be willing to fill a different role in order to continue to grow.  hose of you who are the most adaptable, you’ll find joy in the sport and success.

Who has been your greatest coaching mentor?

Kelli Kaput.  She’s got a great tactical mind but, more importantly, she’s an A+ person. She understands how to motivate and support her athletes and her coaching peers.

What is your favorite movie?

Good Will Hunting. How about d’em apples?
