On Saturday, October 23, 2021, Germantown Academy hosted the inaugural Ginny Hofmann Sports Day (aka GH44) as a tribute to Hofmann's many contributions to athletics at GA. (SEE PHOTOS)

The day began with an opening ceremony and was followed by all GA fall varsity girls team competitions. 

Over the years, Hofmann served GA as a Physical Education Teacher, Health Teacher, Associate Athletic Director, Athletic Director, Girls’ Athletic Director, Assistant Admission Director, Admission Officer, and House Head. But, many Patriots will remember Ginny Hofmann 1760 as a coach.

For 36 years, Hofmann coached the varsity field hockey team in the fall and varsity girls’ lacrosse team in the spring. Combined, her teams had more than 700 wins and earned 11 Inter-Academic Athletic League championships: five field hockey titles and six girls’ lacrosse titles.

In 2008, Hofmann was inducted individually into the Germantown Academy Athletic Hall of Fame, a few years after her 1979 field hockey and her 1997 lacrosse teams were inducted. In 2014, she was selected as the first female recipient of the 2014 Michael F. Mayock Distinguished Teacher-Coach Award.

Hofmann is a member of the U.S. Lacrosse’s Legends Club and named was The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year at one point in her illustrious career. She was previously inducted into the Montgomery County Coaches Hall of Fame and GA’s Honorary Alumni Class, the Class of 1760. To top it off, she is a three-time recipient of GA’s Distinguished Achievement Award.

"This is an amazing honor," said Hofmann. "I'm so touched by the people that have turned out here today for this occasion, some of which I haven't seen in years. This means so much to me and I can't thank you all enough for this.

"When I came here in the fall of 1976, these fields (Sisters Woods) were grass and they were facing the other direction and they were about ten feet down. It was a very different world. In the fall, all the girls had was field hockey—it was the only sport in town. In the winter, it was basketball and swimming; and in the spring, it was lacrosse and tennis. That was it—five sports. All these years, 46 years since then, to see the growth of girls sports here at Germantown Academy is amazing; the success of girls programs and all of the athletics programs, it's so amazing. I so appreciate all of you—girls and women—you've done so much in growing the program. I'd like to say, especially for the girls here today, think about giving back to athletics; whether it's coaching or officiating or becoming an administrator. Girls need to see there are women out there that support the sports.

"Last thing. There are three things that I used to say a fair amount. Give your best effort today and every day when you are out there so there aren't any regrets. Two, make a commitment to your team and your coach wherever they need you and that will really help bond your program together.  The third thing, play because you love it. I hope you're out here because you love sports. I know I did. I love Germantown Academy. I love athletics and my colleagues and everyone here. It's made such a wonderful life for me; it's like I fell into a dream world when I landed here. It's such an amazing place and students here are amazing and I can't thank you all enough."

For all she has done and continues to do, even in retirement, congratulations, Ginny Hofmann!
