Football: Patriots 'D' Shines in Close Loss to West Catholic

CHESTER--The Patriots' defense held powerhouse West Catholic Preparatory High School scoreless for the first three quarters of Friday night's non-league showdown, but the explosive Burrs, a team that traditionally goes far in the PIAA Class AA playoffs, finally broke through during the midway point of the fourth quarter and went on to win 14-0.

With 6:42 to go in the game, Burrs running back Jacir Savoy ran for an eight-yard touchdown and followed that feat up with a two-point conversion. Then, with 3:17 to go, the 5-foot-7, 171-pound junior returned a punt for 48-yards to seal West Catholic's victory at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium on Widener University's campus.

"We competed," GA Head Coach Matt Dence toldThe Intelligencer"The kids played hard. Our defensive kids played so hard. I'm so proud of the effort. They never stopped...If we can clean up some of these mistakes, I think we can do a lot of things in the Inter-Ac. We're going to be a better team because of playing this game."

The Patriots kick off the Inter-Ac League portion of their schedule on Saturday when they travel to The Haverford School. Kickoff is scheduled for 2pm.
