Field Hockey: GA Downs Hill, Faces Episcopal in PAISAA Final

By: Joe Cicchino – Sports Information Assistant

FORT WASHINGTON – For the second straight year, Germantown Academy’s field hockey team will be playing for a Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association Championship. After defeating The Hill School 3-1 on Nov. 7, the Patriots are set to face off against Episcopal Academy in the final round. Last year, GA fell to Academy of Notre Dame de Namur in the same game, 10-2.

“We’re playing Episcopal this time,” Sophie Towne ’21 said. “We beat them 3-1 last time so we’re hoping to pull it out again and get some revenge from last year.”

Against the Rams, GA started quickly. Towne found the back of the net less than two minutes into the game after redirecting a shot from Sammy Popper ’19. The opportunity came off of the third corner the Patriots had won in the first two minutes of play.

“It was high intensity from the start,” Towne said. “To get the first goal was huge. We just wanted to get up as much as possible.”

With seven minutes to play in the first half, Hill knotted up the score. GA had opportunities to go ahead before halftime, but saw their shots get saved or go wide. The two teams went into the break tied 1-1.

It was not long into the second half before Towne scored again. Just like the first goal, it was Popper getting the assist and it came off of a corner. Four minutes later, Catherine McFadden ’20 put GA ahead, 3-1.

“Mentally I think we turned it on a little bit more,” Towne said. “We wanted to have a dominant win. We beat them last week, so today we just wanted to do it again.”

Hill had three corners in the final 20 minutes of play, but were unable to take advantage of them.

The Patriots will take on Episcopal Academy in the PAISAA Championship on Nov. 13. GA is 1-0-1 against the Churchwomen this year, winning the most recent contest 3-1 on Oct. 12.

"Last year our reach was beating Episcopal so just getting to the championship was amazing," Towne said. "This year, it was our goal to win the championship. Now we're here so we're going for the win."
