Boys Water Polo: Patriots Set Records in Win Over Penn Charter

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

PHILADELPHIA -- The Patriots ended the season on a very high note, overpowering rival Penn Charter on GA-PC Day. The Patriots tied a season high in Saturday's showdown in scoring and handily defeated the Quakers, 19-3.

Walker Butler '20 opened the scoring by finishing off a drive and giving the Patriots a lead that they would not relinquish.

"We dominated on both ends of the pool, getting great offensive opportunities and shutting down everything PC put up," said Head Coach Mike Koziol. "Every Patriot got to play in the game. It was special to be able to get everyone to experience what playing in a GA-PC Day game is like."

Leading the way on offense was captain and game MVP Finn Lillis '18.

Lillis came into the game with 291 career goals, nine short of tying Carl Dowzicky's (GA Class of 2012) all-time career scoring record. Lillis scored his 10th goal to set the new record with under a minute left in the fourth quarter. He and his fellow captain Henry Grady '18 left the game to a standing ovation after his record setting tally.

"From the start of the game the team was set on getting him the record, and throughout the game they were asking [Assistant Coach] Paige [Neary] how many more they needed to get him," Koziol said. "The team wanted him to get the record and it was special for him to get it on GA-PC day."

In addition to the career scoring record, Lillis broke another record of Dowzicky’s. After his 10-goal performance, Lillis has 17 career goals on GA-PC Day, breaking the previous record of 13.

Not only was the offense on display, but the defense as well. Grady’s four saves raised his career total to 365, which ranks him second all-time. Additionally, he finished with a career 49.5 save percentage, GA’s best all time. The team win also made history, as GA has won back to back GA-PC Day games for the first time since 2004-2005.
