Boys Soccer: Patriots Advance in PAISAA Tournament with Thrilling Shootout Win

PHILADELPHIA -- The No. 11-seeded Germantown Academy boys soccer team pulled off a dramatic 8-7 penalty kick victory over No. 6-seeded Germantown Friends School in the first round of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) Tournament.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from the start, with Quinlan Rink '26 scoring all three of the Patriots’ goals. Charlie Wetzel '27 and Connor Harrington '26 each recorded key assists as the teams battled to a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation. Two additional 10-minute overtime periods proved scoreless, setting the stage for a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, GA converted each of its first seven attempts, with Harrington, Rink, Wetzel, Logan Burgey '28, Will Kirkpatrick '26, Michael Trent '29, and Jayden Gattuso '26 all finding the net. In the eighth round, goalkeeper Rowen Harbert '26 made a clutch save, setting up Hutch Loney '27 to convert the game-winning kick and send the Patriots through to the next round.

GA will face Haverford School on the road on Nov. 4, as they continue their run in the PAISAA Tournament.
