Boys Soccer: Harrington Leads Germantown Academy Past Malvern Prep, 3-0

MALVERN -- Connor Harrington ’26 scored two goals and assisted on another to lead Germantown Academy past Malvern Prep, 3-0, in Inter-Ac League action Saturday, Oct. 18. The win marked the Patriots’ fourth shutout of the season and improved their record to 7-6-2 overall and 2-4 in league play.

“The boys played very well today, front to back,” Head Coach Kurt Wetzel ’88 said. “Our bench was the MVP. Everybody did their job and gave our starters some important time off. It worked out well.”

Harrington opened the scoring in the 25th minute after drawing and converting a penalty kick, then added his second goal in the 31st minute.

“He deserves a lot of credit for that second goal,” Wetzel said. “He was hunting for the ball, picked a guy’s pocket, picked his head up, realized the goalkeeper was on the 20-yard line, and just pinged one. It was a gorgeous shot.”

Even with a 2-0 lead, the Patriots did not let up in the second half. Harrington found Sean Hagelin ’28 for the third goal, which stemmed from a foul on Quinlan Rink ’26, in the 59th minute.

The win also marked a personal milestone for Wetzel, who surpassed Germantown Academy Athletics Hall of Famer Duncan Hubley ’57 for third place on the program’s all-time wins list with 60.

“It’s a privilege, to be fair,” Wetzel said. “Duncan was an excellent coach. To know that I’ve achieved such a record is wonderful, but it has nothing to do with me. The boys are the ones who do the work, put in the effort, and score the goals. Our job as coaches is to put them in a position to be successful. I’m just happy to be part of that.”

The Patriots return to action Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. when they host Episcopal Academy at Carey Stadium.
