Boys Lacrosse: Patriots Topple Spartans

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

ERDENHEIM -- Going into its contest against Springfield Township High School on April 18, Germantown Academy's boys lacrosse team had suffered three straight losses by a combined nine goals and had not scored double digits in any of those contests. Against the Spartans, the Patriots showed no signs of weakness, scoring 13 goals while allowing just four in a dominant performance.

"I think we played a great game today," Head Coach Billy McKinney said. "We controlled the ball on offense, we only played 32 seconds of defense in the entire second quarter, which is pretty impressive."

GA got goals from six different players during the game and all of them had at least two scores. Gunnar Bogorowski '19 led the way with three, while Gavin Derham '19, Noah Spratt '20, Tim Ruth '19, Jack Luviano '22 and Wills Jordan '19 all had two.

McKinney said that the reason for the even distribution of scoring was because the team trusts in themselves and in each other to make plays. He called it "the best effort of the season."

The Patriots took the lead early and went ahead 3-0 before Springfield was able to answer. The Spartans scored with 1:44 left in the first quarter, only to have Ruth score with :21 on the clock. GA tacked on another four goals in the second quarter to give themselves an 8-1 halftime lead.

While the offense was stealing the show, the defense and goalie Brendan Donnelly '22 shut down almost every goal-scoring opportunity they faced.

"He's a freshman and he stepped up," McKinney said. "He made four saves in the first half, they put five shots on goal. That was good to see him step up and grow and mature as the season gets older."

GA scored five straight goals in the second half. It was not until the fourth quarter that Springfield started to get opportunities, well after GA started to mix in younger players.

The Patriots are now 3-6 overall. They have a week before their next contest, a matchup with Inter-Ac League foe Malvern Prep. McKinney said he's hoping for a similar performance against the Friars.

"We're going to continue to work," McKinney said. "Hopefully we have a showing like we did today, go out, play poised and really control the ball."

Germantown Academy travels to Malvern Prep on April 25 for a 4:00 p.m. game.
