Boys Lacrosse: Offense Shines Against Archbishop Wood

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

FORT WASHINGTON -- Germantown Academy opened up its 2018 boys lacrosse season with a 6-4 win over Springfield Township High School on March 24. Three days later, GA played again. However, this matchup was no where near as close as the opener.

The Patriots netted 11 first-half goals en route to a 13-0 victory over visiting Archbishop Wood. While the high-octane offense played a key role in the win, the recent string of bad weather also seems to have played a part, according to GA Head Coach Billy McKinney.

"The team came out and they just did what they were coached which is fun to see," McKinney said. "Archbishop Wood hasn't been able to play outside a lot because they have a grass field. We had a pretty good advantage with the turf here."

It took four minutes for the Patriots to find the back of the net, but once they did there was no stopping. Noah Spratt '20 scored two goals in the first quarter, while Wills Jordan '19, Liam Rosato '19 and Bruce Henry '20 each added one.

In the second, the offense continued to roll, scoring six more times. At halftime the Patriots led the Vikings, 11-0.

Goals were sparse in the second half due to strategic changes by GA. Thane Burger '19 and Henry tacked on two goals in the fourth quarter to bring things to a close.

"In the second half our focus was getting the freshmen involved," McKinney said. "We try to get those guys to grow up during the game because we rely on them. We're playing a lot of young guys."

GA will have some time off before its next contest, a matchup against Manheim Township High School on April 3. McKinney said that the game will prove to be a good test for the Patriots.

"They're good," McKinney said. "They're one of the most talented teams in the area. Hopefully we will learn from this game, build and go and compete with them."
