Boys Basketball: PC Pulls Away Late, Tops Patriots

FORT WASHINGTON -- With the Big Gym hosting fans for the first time in a few weeks, Germantown Academy's boys basketball team was looking to pick up another result and another Inter-Ac League. The Patriots were coming off of a 46-44 win over Haverford School on Jan. 18 and a win over visiting Penn Charter would have leveled their league record. Unfortunately, the Quakers had other plans, topping GA 57-51.

Penn Charter struck first, but Blake Smith '22 came right back with a three to put GA ahead. An 11-6 run helped GA build an advantage, but the team could not convert a shot in the final three minutes of the quarter. PC led, 15-14 after one frame.

After a second quarter that saw four lead changes, the Quakers had a three point advantage at the half. They extended that lead to five by the end of the third quarter.

GA entered the fourth in prime position to make a move and take the lead over its rival, but were unable to get over the hump. The Patriots made it a 52-49 ballgame with 2:43 left in the fourth. However, Penn Charter used a 5-2 run down the stretch to ice the game.

Smith led GA with 16 points, eight of them coming in the fourth quarter. Bryce Rollerson '25 also saved his best effort for the final frame, scoring five of his 11 in the fourth. Casey Traina '22 rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

The Patriots (6-6 overall, 1-3 Inter-Ac) are back in action on Jan. 22 as they travel to New Jersey to take on Hun School of Princeton at 2:30 p.m.
