Boys Basketball: Offense Comes Alive as Patriots Down Palumbo

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

FORT WASHINGTON -- The weather outside was frigid, but Germantown Academy's offense was on fire when they hosted Academy at Palumbo on Dec. 15. Fans and students filled the Big Gym and watched the Patriots down Palumbo, 72-61.

Germantown Academy was paced by Jordan Longino '21 and his 19 points, while fellow guard Lacey Snowden '21 poured in 17 of his own. The 72 point outing is the highest total for GA this year.

"We're slowly maturing and getting better," Head Coach Jim Fenerty 1760 said. "I think we still have a long way to go, but we beat a good team and a very athletic team."

The win was important for the Patriots, who had lost their previous two games. Despite the early season struggles, Fenerty said that no one on the team was hanging their head.

"I don't think any of them gave up," Fenerty said. "We have to put together four quarters of playing hard together. We turned a page against [St. Joseph's Prep]. I'm pleased -- I'm never pleased -- but I think we're making progress."

That progress was shown in the contest against the Griffins. Germantown Academy never trailed and held a double-digit lead for the majority of the game. At halftime GA held a 40-23 advantage over Palumbo.

However, when things got tight late, the team did not falter. Heading into the final frame, the Patriots had a 55-42 lead. With a minute and a half left to play, the Griffins were only trailing by nine points. Ultimately, the Patriots showed poise and were able to ice the game with free throws.

"In the first half we played like our talent dictates, but in the second half we came out and we showed our youth," Fenerty said. "The more we play together the better off we'll be. We've had young teams before, but never quite this young. When they play hard I think good things happen."

Germantown Academy is now 3-3 on the year and will face off against West Catholic High School in the Big Gym on Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m.
