Boys Basketball: Foul Trouble Plagues GA in Loss to SCH

By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

PHILADELPHIA -- Entering the final quarter of play against Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, Germantown Academy found themselves down by 18 points. While some teams would have given up hope, the Patriots kept fighting and cut that lead down to seven with 1:37 left to play. However, that is as close as GA would get as SCH would go 9-10 from the free-throw line in the final minute to secure a 78-69 win.

The Blue Devils got to the charity stripe early and often on Jan. 11. SCH shot 38 free throws on the night, converting on 30. In comparison, GA had 23 opportunities and made 15. Assistant Coach Carlos Chubb was at the helm for Head Coach Jim Fenerty, who was under the weather.

"They made their free throws," Chubb said. "They were shooting two free throws towards the end of the third quarter and that conditions the game. When free throws fall and you foul a lot, that helps them win the game."

Late in the game, Brian Basile '19, Jake Hsu '22 and Diego Carrasco '19 reached their limit and fouled out. The trio combined to score 31 of the Patriots' 69 points.

GA played SCH to a tight first half, trailing by only four at the intermission. However, the Patriots were outscored 25-11 in the third and could never make up the deficit.

"Our 2-3 zone defense against Haverford worked really well and we thought that would stop SCH, but they attacked it really well," Chubb said. "By the time we were active it was too late. If we had a little bit more time we could have been in the game because our man defense was good and our press was good."

Despite the loss, Chubb said that the team's fourth-quarter effort showed that they can play good basketball when they are synchronized. While the loss is "frustrating," GA has to bounce back as they face Carver E & S at home on Jan. 12.

GA is now 6-7 overall and 0-3 in the Inter-Ac League.
