Baseball: Germantown Academy Sinks Shipley, Takes on Malvern Prep in PAISAA Quarterfinal

FORT WASHINGTON -- It has been an arduous season for the Germantown Academy baseball team. The Patriots had to not only battle against their opponents on the diamond, but also waged against Mother Nature, who seemingly would not let the team get a full week's worth of work without forcing a delay or a postponement. That trend continued on May 20 when the Patriots hosted Shipley in the first round of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association Tournament and the game was delayed for about an hour. However, the setback did not hurt the Patriots, who won the contest, 6-1.

Aidan von Zuben '24 got the start for GA and responded with a strong four innings. GA got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Joe Joe Cava '22 recorded a 2RBI single to score Eddie Copper '23 and Aidan Zakarewicz '23. Roan Harrington '24 scored later in the inning as a pinch-runner for Cava to give the Patriots an early 3-0 lead. After a 1-2-3 inning on defense, the Patriots got a run from Eric Cross '24 to extend the advantage to four.

The Gators were able to get on on the board, but were limited to just one run. GA added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when Mike McGhee '22 and Tripp Caper '24 scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the seventh, Shipley had runners on third and second, but were unable to score thanks to some deft pitching from Zach Genovesi '23, who came on it the top of the fifth.

With the win, GA now travels to No. 1-seeded Malvern Prep for a matchup against the Friars. The Patriots are 0-2 against Malvern Prep this year, falling 7-4 and 7-1 during the season.
