Georgetown University field hockey junior standout Sophie Towne '21 was selected to participate in the 2023 Senior Nexus Championship (NXC), presented by Osaka Hockey, which will be held at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach this week from July 11-16.
The Senior NXC is held annually and features 144 elite high school, collegiate and post-collegiate athletes. During the spring and early summer, athletes trialed and trained at one of the seven USA Field Hockey High Performance Centers throughout the country for an opportunity to be selected to the Senior NXC, a step along the Olympic Development Pathway program. All athletes that were previously named to the U.S. U-18, U-21, and Development Women's National Teams were also included within the selection.
The event began with a team training session on Tuesday, July 11 and games starting on Wednesday, July 12, with the opportunity to be selected for the 2023-24 U.S. Women's National Team and Junior USWNT Selection Camps at stake.
Towne has started all 38 games in her two seasons at Georgetown. She has scored 10 goals to go with three assists for 23 career points and tallied three game-winning goals as a freshman in 2021.
A member of Team Squaw Valley, Towne will compete in the Senior NXC beginning on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. against Team Lake Placid, followed by a game against Team Vancouver on Thursday at 4 p.m. and against Team Montreal on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
