By: Joe Cicchino - Sports Information Assistant

LIMA, Peru -- Germantown Academy graduate Andrew Abruzzo '18 made big splash on the first night of the 2019 Pan American Games by winning gold in the 400 Freestyle. However, it was not the last time that he would grace the top of the awards podium at the Games.

Abruzzo brought his total medal count to three after taking home gold in the Mixed 400 Freestyle Relay and in the 800 Freestyle. His time of 7:54.70 in the 800 set a new meet record, as this was the first Games in which the race has been contested. Abruzzo was almost two seconds faster than the next finisher.

In the Mixed 400 Freestyle Relay, he along with the other swimmers from the United States went 3:24.84, topping the second-place Brazil team by 1.13 seconds.

Abruzzo is slated to swim in the Men's 1500m Freestyle, which is scheduled to take place on Aug. 10. His qualifying time of 15:11.97 is the third fastest among those in the third final.
