Fran Crippen '02 was a high school and college swimming All-American, Team USA member for the 1500-meter free and 10K open water events, world-traveler and, most recently, a volunteer swim instructor for some of GA’s youngest students. Fran had been informed, prior to his recent tragic passing, by Jim Fenerty that he was going to be inducted in this year’s class. He was honored and a little more than humbled to be going into the same Hall of Fame as his sister Maddy ‘98 and, of course, his legendary coach Dick Shoulberg 1760. But what truly brought tears to the eyes of all 280 attendees at the dinner that night was the way Maddy invoked Fran’s special spirit in her poignant presentation. In “Fran-speak,” Maddy gave shout-outs and thank you’s to family, friends, coaches, faculty, mentors, buddies and a very special grandfather, mimicking the same manner and inflection as her brother would have surely used.
